How Artists Enter the Flow State

The Flow State Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

One of the most studied phenomena in the psychology of creativity. A moment of deep immersion, when attention becomes fully focused and the sense of time shifts.

Conditions for entering Flow: a task that is slightly more challenging than usual
a clear goal, for example creating three color variations rather than simply drawing
minimal external distractions a defined time limit.

Practice: up to 90 minutes of focused work followed by a mandatory break.

For an artist, entering the flow state is not always easy. Sometimes it takes time for the mind to slow down and for attention to gather in one place.
Leaving this state can be difficult as well. When the process becomes fully absorbing, stepping away can feel almost like waking up abruptly.

This is how I work with collage. I define the task in advance, remove distractions, and set a timer. At a certain point, the inner noise fades, leaving only the dialogue with form, color, and rhythm. Without waiting for inspiration and without pressure on the outcome.

Flow is experienced as structured attention. It can be cultivated rather than awaited, especially when we listen closely to our own working rhythm.
